Crash course: Early career researcher guide offers practical tips
After getting their doctorates, early career researchers face many challenging decisions.
Elsevier's new booklet "Charting a Course for a Successful Research Career" offers practical advice to help early career researchers choose the best paths.
Written by Professor Alan Johnson, the guide looks in-depth at important steps an ECR can take in order to have a successful research career.
In the initial chapters, Alan explains how to create a career plan and select a research discipline, supervisor and mentor. He also discusses the importance of collaboration and networking and how to go about these functions in an effective way.
The second half of the guide offers pointers regarding how and where to publish research findings. The last chapters explain how researchers should apply for funding and collaborate with industry and academia. Additionally the guide covers ensuring that one receives recognition for one's work.
